Der chinesische Menschenrechtler Hu Jia sitzt seit dem Jahreswechsel wegen “Anstiftung zur Subversion” im Gefängnis. Sein offener Brief “The Real China and the Olympics” wurde bereits September 2007 veröffentlicht, aber bisher nicht übersetzt. Bis dahin deckte er mit Videos vom Hausarrest, Blogeinträgen und Podcasts Menschenrechtsverletzungen und Mißstände auf. Es gilt unverändert, dass China noch immer eine Diktatur ist.

When you come to the Olympic Games in Beijing, you will see skyscrapers, spacious streets, modern stadiums and enthusiastic people. You will see the truth, but not the whole truth, just as you see only the tip of an iceberg. You may not know that the flowers, smiles, harmony and prosperity are built on a base of grievances, tears, imprisonment, torture and blood.
We are going to tell you the truth about China. We believe that for anyone who wishes to avoid a disgraceful Olympics, knowing the truth is the first step.

“The longer Hu Jia is in detention, the worse China’s image will be,” said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. “With fewer than six months to go before the Olympics, the Chinese government has everything to gain and nothing to lose by releasing him.”
Auch Anmesty International ist in diesem Fall mit einer Urgent Action bis zum 15. März aktiv und fordert “Gold für Menschenrechte”.
